Unit Overview
We are gearing up to start our second unit of study on Friday. Below you will find an overview of our upcoming unit. It's a pretty big unit with lots of components. The contents in this unit will be life changing for your child. They will become more thoughtful about their consumption and gain more insight about others in the world around them. This unit will be the launching pad for our service leadership project.
In part II of our unit of study, students will explore the distribution and use of natural resources in the U.S. & Haiti and the Continent of Africa. We will specifically focus on WATER. Our macro-conceptual lens for this unit is still natural resources, but we will examine them through the micro-lens of GREED. Students will study the role of greed, the 3R’s & conservation to help us further understand how to protect and maintain our resources.
The goal of this unit is to give students an overview and understanding of needs vs. wants. We will use Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs as a framework throughout this study. Maslow’s taxonomy states that at a basic level people need food, water, and shelter to survive. I want students to challenge their thinking about their personal use of resources and their idea of what they “need” vs what they “want” to survive. I want students to understand that misuse of and lack of regard for the resources, namely water-has dangerous repercussions for everyone involved.
At the conclusion of this unit, students will be able to discuss and fully answer the question, “What do all people deserve?”
There are many enduring understandings that I want students to learn, but most important is that all people deserve access to water as water is a precursor for survival and is foundation to building a thriving community. Students will also learn that we are responsible for how we use the world’s resources (water) and how we help others gain access to these resources (water.)
